Description

Tropical fruit with purple or green skin. When cut crosswise, the core reveals a star pattern. Pulp is sweet, milky, and gelatinous.

History and Origins

Star Apple, or Caimito, is native to Central America and the Caribbean. It was introduced to other tropical regions for its ornamental value (golden underside leaves) and sweet fruit.

The name comes from the star shape seen when cut! Warning: the skin contains bitter latex—do not bite into it; spoon out the flesh. The tree leaves are beautiful: green on top, gold underneath.
