Palm fruit endemic to Northeastern Brazil. The small nuts are used to produce oil and crafts. A vital food source for the endangered Lear's Macaw.

History and Origins

Licuri is a palm native to the Brazilian semi-arid region. It was a source of food and oil for indigenous peoples and rural communities, known as the "gold of the backlands". Today, it is a symbol of the food culture of the state of Bahia.

Licuri is so important that there is a Licuri Festival in Bahia! The nut is small but yields milk, oil, and flour. Locals say "once you taste Licuri, you never forget the flavor".
