Description

Yellow citrus fruit with an oval shape and thick rind. The juice is acidic (5% citric acid) and aromatic. Distinct from the green "Lime" common in Brazil.

History and Origins

The true Lemon (*Citrus limon*) originated in Northeast India. It entered Europe near southern Italy (hence "Sicilian Lemon" in Portuguese) in the 2nd century AD. It was a luxury item before becoming a global culinary staple.

Lemons were the primary cure for scurvy for sailors in the 18th century. Unlike limes, yellow lemons float in water! A single tree can produce up to 270 kg of fruit per year.
