History and Origins
White Sapote is native to Central Mexico. The Aztecs called it "cochitzapotl" (sleepy sapote) because they believed eating it induced sleep. It is botanically a citrus relative, despite the look!

The seeds were historically used by Aztecs to induce sleep, but they are toxic in large quantities. The fruit is extremely fragile when ripe and bruises easily.
